E' stato un Damiano Cunego pimpante e dalla bella pedalata quello visto nella 5^tappa del Giro di Svizzera, 202 km con partenza da Stafa e arrivo in salita nell'austriaca Serfaus.
Il capitano della Lampre-NGC ha colto il terzo posto alle spalle del vincitore Albasini e di Cancellara.
Dopo alcune fughe che hanno caratterizzato la prima parte di gara, la battaglia per la vittoria è scoppiata a 10 km dall'arrivo, ovvero piedi della salita finale: una serie di attacchi ha selezionato un gruppetto di testa composto da 12 corridori, tra i quali pedalava con efficacia anche Cunego. Nessuno tra questi atleti è riuscito a effettuare sortite solitarie fino a quando, nei pressi del traguardo, Albasini e Cancellara si sono avvantaggiati sul resto del gruppo: vittoria per Albasini su Cancellara, con Cunego autore di una tardiva rimonta purtroppo non portata a termine per poco.
In classifica generale guida ancora Valjacev (oggi 9°), con Cunego 10° a 1'02". Gasparotto è tornato in testa alla classifica degli sprint intermedi.
"La prova di Damiano è stata molto buona – ha commentato il ds Copeland – E' mancato il risultato pieno, però la prestazione di oggi offre segnali interessanti sulla condizione del corridore e dà morale per le prossime tappe".
Anche Cunego è soddisfatto: "La tappa era impegnativa ed essere davanti a lottare per la vittoria è certamente un bel risultato, anche se sarebbe stato il massimo aver potuto ottenere il successo: purtroppo è bastata una frazione di secondo per perdere Albasini e Cancellara. Se ce ne sarà l'occasione, proverò a rifarmi nelle prossime tappe".

Lampre-NGC's captain obtained the third place behind the winner Albasini and Cancellara.
After some breakaways that characterized the first part of the stage, the battle for the victory bagan at 10 km to go, at the base of the last climb: some attacks selected a little group of 12 athletes with Cunego in it.
No one of these cyclists could escape until, close to the arrival, Albasini and Cancellara took an advantage and could preceed the other athletes: victory for Albasini, Cancellara 2nd and Cunego third just behind them.
In the overall standing, led by Valjavec, Cunego is 10th at 1'02". Gasparotto is the new leader of the intermediate sprint classification.
"Damiano performance has been good – sport director Copeland said – We're happy because today he showed a good fit that could be useful for the next stages too".
Cunego too is satisfied: "The stage was tough, but I was in the head of the race battling for the victory: this is very important. I'm sorry for the missed win, but they surprised me for one second. I'll try again in the next stages".
